Different type of caravans

Being in this business for many years I am often astounded at how many people do not know the difference between Caravans (Static and Touring) and Motorhomes. I sometimes have to stand back, take a deep breath and realise that most people havent seen the shear amount of caravans that I have over my long career (and even longer working hours). I thought I would take the time to chat a little  bit here about the differences between these caravans and motorhomes, campervans and such.

Lets start with the types of caravans, I have listed them below:

  • Static Caravans (a.k.a Statics)
  • Touring Caravans (a.k.a Tourers)
  • Motorhomes (a.k.a Campers or Campervans)

Ok Static Caravans are the type that are put onto a plot and left there for most of their life, they are the larger type with generally more services than their towed and motorised bretherin. Static Caravans will likely only be transported a few times in their life and when they are will be moved on the back of a large lorry rather than driven or towed.

Touring Caravans are the type of caravan that is towed behind a car and taken to a caravan park for a short stay. Although not all tourers are towed from site to site, some are placed onto a site and rarely moved. A tourer should be road worthy and easy enough to be towed by any car with a tow ball, preferably with a stabiliser bar also. Tourers will have less services than a static but will often nowadays have a toilet, shower and cooking facilities built in as standard.

Motorhomes are the type of caravan that is driven, it need not be towed or transported on a lorry as it has its own engine. As such they tend to be smaller than static caravans but slightly bigger than tourers, as the space for the driving area needs to be made up in the back where the traveller will be staying. Motorhomes vary wildly in size and shape and also price ranging from a modest 2berth 8″x12″ £22,000 motorhome right up to a 10berth 12″x34″ £120,000 monster.

There we go, I hope that has cleared things up a little bit for some people. If I have missed anything out feel free to leave a comment below, even if it is abusive :)
